Scented with the sharp tang of the moka and the feel of dark dust against the fingertips, this is the story of how coffee stopped being ‘just what you do’ and became ‘the best thing we could do’.

Kitchen Sounds
Growing up in Italy means inheriting a ritual you didn’t choose. The water, the filter, the little mound of coffee: automatic, almost hypnotic gestures. Giuseppe watched that crema, thick as lava, and thought the whole world was right there. He was wrong.

Coffee acted as a social punctuation, marking the rhythm of bars, lecture halls, and offices. It was a break that masked itself as freedom, though it would usually result in sheer inertia. We used it to stay awake, never once pausing to ask if the coffee itself was alive.
